Neurodiversity and Girls
At Sketchbook Psychology we get lots of enquiries about working with neurodiversity; whether that’s people with a formal diagnosis of autism or ADHD, or young people that describe the struggle to fit in and finding that school and friendships are really challenging. The feeling of being different can get you questioning if there is something wrong with you and can leave you feeling really low, stressed out and anxious.
There is a lot known in psychology about boys and neurodiversity, and this is something we are only starting to understand in girls. For example, autism can look very different in girls and boys. Girls seem to be really good at masking, and making it look like they can fit in. In reality, this masking is an exhausting and stressful way of being, that can lead to burn out in lots of young people.
